The Hot Six #24 Preview

A great dance song can be like a drug. You listen. Try it out. Screen it. Fall in love instantly or let it take over you slowly, like a full-body massage.

Then you love it. Gotta have it again. So, you listen. Again. And again. Now you’re addicted. The track is on repeat. You turn it off, and it’s still stuck in your head. You listen more. You’re a fiend. You’re scratching your neck for it. You’re consumed.

If you could, you’d make love to it. You listen to it at a club and you bust in your pants. You’re a dirty person. You feel guilty that a song made you deploy fluids in public. It’s embarrassing.

You don’t care. You’re drunk and you’re still singing the track’s chorus down the stairs of the club while your boy holds you up as if you were a dead corpse. What’s wrong with you? You need to get it together, but all you want to do is drunk dial your ex-girlfriend, tell her she sucks, and then sing the song incoherently into the phone. You’re a full-blown addict.

In the morning, you’ll need professional help. But, you won’t get it. Instead, you’ll just put the track back on. You’re hopeless.

After a day or two, you’ve moved on like Trump moves on from wives. It’s over. That song that you just vomited on yourself for cuz you had to have ten shots when it came on, jilted like a lover. Next hot track.

A couple weeks go by, and you hear the remix. You’re intrigued again. It’s tickling your fancy. Not quite the same song, but the high is still there. It’s different, though. Like being the little spoon. It doesn’t feel right, but you like it when your girl turns to her side and embraces you in bed. There’s something wrong about it, but also something right.

But, you’ve had this high before. Remember, you are an addict. You can’t just get back to the same place with the same track. You need something different. The remix. The remix gets you there in a different way. It’s a different high, but you like it just the same. Maybe more. Maybe not quite as much. But, it is familiar. And you like what you once had. Now you’re getting it again in a similar, but unique way.

Levels was my gateway drug. Levels with vocals was my addiction. Good Feeling was the high again in different form. The Skrillex remix is a high in yet another different form. A little edgier, and more out there, but necessary to get to that high again.

I might need help.
